Civil War Weapons
Civil War soldiers used a variety of weapons in combat. The most popular weapon was the rifle, however, soldiers also used knives, swords, hand guns, and heavy artillery such as cannons.
Knives and Swords
The saber shown in this picture of a US Cavalry Sergeant was used by officers and members of the Union Cavalry.
Bowie knives were used by soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. Soldiers often had to provide their own weapons, especially in the South. Since many young men already had a bowie knife prior to joining the fighting, it became a popular weapon for the average soldier.

This is a replica of the typical type of sword used by a field officer during the Civil War.
Percussion Rifle Musket
The 1861 percussion rifle musket was one of the most widely used weapons during the Civil War. It is estimated that over 1 million of them were manufactured during the war.
The Sharps rifle was used by sharpshooters due to its accuracy from long range.
This carbine was designed by Union General Ambrose Burnside. Around 55,000 Burnside carbines were ordered by the Union army. Carbines were typically used by cavalry units because they have shorter barrels than rifles or muskets.
The Springfield Model 1861 shown here with a bayonet. The bayonet would be attached at the end of the rifle and used during hand-to-hand combat.
The minnie ball was the most populuar type of bullet used during the Civil War.
The Colt Model 1860 Army revolver was the main hand gun used by Union soldiers. It was mostly used by officers and was considered a very reliable weapon
The Remington New Model Army revolver was a six-shot .44 caliber revolver used by Union soldiers during the Civil War.
The M1857 12-Pounder "Napoleon" was the most popular smoothbore cannon of the Civil War. It was considered a reliable and accurate for up to a mile.
3-Inch Rifled Gun
This small 3-inch cannon, or rifled gun, was widely used during the Civil War. It was considered durable and very accurate.
This is the Gatling gun Model 1862 Type II. The Gatling gun was a rapid-fire hand-cranked gun that was first used in warfare during the American Civil War.
